Alpine Coaster Explained – Theme Park Definition

An alpine coaster (also called a mountain coaster) is a sled- or cart-based ride fixed to a rail that follows the natural contours of a hillside, letting riders descend at a speed they set themselves with a hand brake. Unlike a traditional coaster there is no train and usually no powered launch — gravity and the terrain provide the ride, while a cable tows carts back to the top. They are a year-round fixture at Alpine resorts and have spread worldwide; the older, trough-based "Sommerrodelbahn" (summer toboggan run) is their close relative.
