Bumper Cars Explained – Theme Park Definition

Bumper cars run on a steel floor with a conductive ceiling grid: a pole on each car picks up current from above and returns it through the floor, so the vehicles can be driven freely without batteries or a track. Heavy rubber bumpers absorb the collisions the whole ride is built around. Modern installations increasingly use floor-pickup or battery-powered cars, which removes the overhead grid and frees the designer to theme the ceiling.

It is one of the oldest ride types still in continuous production — the Lusse Auto-Skooter dates to the 1920s — and one of the few where riders control what happens. Nearly every full-size park runs a set, from Phantasialand’s Bumper Klumpen to Europa-Park’s Lada Autodrom.
