Lift Hill
The mechanically powered ascent that pulls a coaster train to its highest point, building the potential energy that powers the rest of the ride.
Coaster Elements
The lift hill is the segment where an external mechanism pulls the coaster train from near ground level to the ride's highest point, converting electrical energy into gravitational potential energy. The most common mechanism is a continuously moving chain running along the centre of the track — the familiar 'click-click-click' sound is the anti-rollback ratchet engaging to prevent the train from sliding backward. Alternatives include cable lifts (smoother and quieter, used on some B&M rides), tire-drive hills, and magnetic lift systems.
The height of the lift hill determines the coaster's maximum potential speed — a 70-metre lift produces more speed than a 40-metre lift, all else being equal. The lift hill is typically the slowest and most anticipation-filled moment of the ride: the gradual ascent, the ever-expanding view, and the sound of the chain create a classic theme park sensory experience that launch coasters intentionally replace with instant acceleration. Some enthusiasts specifically prefer lift hill coasters for this theatrical build-up.
