First Drop
The initial descent after the lift hill or launch — typically the ride's fastest point and the defining statement of its character.
Coaster Elements
The first drop is the primary descent immediately following the lift hill or launch segment. On most traditional coasters it is the tallest element and produces the coaster's maximum speed. The drop's angle, height, and profile strongly influence the overall character of the ride: steep-angle drops (over 80 degrees) create a sensation of near-vertical plunge and intense acceleration; parabolic drops with a carefully shaped profile can generate powerful airtime despite a gentler approach angle.
Dive coasters are specifically designed around an exceptionally dramatic first drop experience — the wide train pauses at the crest before plunging beyond vertical. The beyond-vertical drops (over 90 degrees) of Oblivion at Alton Towers and SheiKra at Busch Gardens have been central to those rides' identities since their opening. The first drop is the most commonly filmed element in roller coaster POV and promotional footage, and the moment most riders describe when recounting a coaster experience to someone who hasn't ridden it.
