Beyond-Vertical Drop Explained – Theme Park Definition

A beyond-vertical drop exceeds 90 degrees of steepness, meaning the track curls back under itself so riders are momentarily tilted past straight-down and pointed slightly backward toward the structure. The effect maximises the sensation of free-fall and the fear of the drop. Gerstlauer's Euro-Fighter model popularised the format with drops around 95–97°, and B&M and others have built dive coasters with similar overhanging first drops. Rides like Mumbo Jumbo and Takabisha have held records for the steepest such drops.
