Swing Launch Explained – Theme Park Definition

A swing launch (also called a shuttle or multi-pass launch) accelerates the train, lets it run out of speed on a rising section of track, and catches it again on the way back — repeating the cycle two or three times until there is enough energy to complete the circuit. Each pass adds speed the launch motors alone could not deliver in one go, so a swing launch buys a much higher top speed out of a much shorter launch track.

It is also a show element in its own right: riders travel backwards through part of the layout, usually up a vertical spike, before being thrown forwards again. Toutatis at Parc Astérix, The Ride to Happiness at Plopsaland and Hansa-Park’s Oath of Kärnan all use one. Premier Rides’ Sky Rocket II model builds an entire compact coaster around the idea.
