Wait Times
Virtual Queue Explained – Theme Park Definition
A virtual queue (sometimes called a boarding group or return time) lets guests register for a ride via a park app or kiosk and receive a notification when their turn is approaching. Instead of standing in a physical queue, guests can explore other attractions, eat, or rest until their group is called. Parks use virtual queues for their highest-demand new attractions where physical queuing would create dangerous or unmanageable crowd concentrations.
Virtual queues typically open at a fixed time — often the moment the park gates open — and can fill within minutes on busy days. Disney has used the system for Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance and Tron Lightcycle Run; Universal introduced it for Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure. The key planning insight is that securing a virtual queue spot is often the very first thing you should do upon entering the park, before visiting any other attraction.
