Dark Ride

A dark ride is an indoor attraction where guests travel in vehicles — cars on a fixed or trackless system, boats on a water channel, or gondolas on an overhead rail — through elaborately themed scenes. The 'dark' in the name refers to the controlled lighting environment that makes projections, animatronics, and physical sets most effective. Dark rides range from gentle family classics (it's a small world, Pinocchio's Daring Journey) to intensely immersive narrative experiences (Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure).

Trackless dark rides — where vehicles move freely without fixed rails, guided by floor-embedded technology — represent the current cutting edge of the format. They enable non-linear storytelling with scenes that approach vehicles from multiple angles. Dark rides tend to have high hourly throughput compared to roller coasters, making them particularly useful for crowd management at peak parks. Symbolica at Efteling and Ratatouille: The Adventure at Disneyland Paris are celebrated European examples of the trackless format.
