Interactive Dark Ride Explained – Theme Park Definition

An interactive dark ride hands riders a device — usually an infrared blaster, sometimes a touchscreen or just their hands — and builds the show around what they do with it. Targets in each scene register hits and feed a per-rider score displayed at the end. Because the scoring gives people a reason to ride again and again, these attractions have some of the highest repeat-visit rates in any park, which is exactly why operators keep building them.

The genre splits into two schools. Physical rides shoot at real, animated set pieces: Maus au Chocolat at Phantasialand and Men in Black: Alien Attack at Universal Studios Florida. Screen-based rides shoot at projected targets, which allows far more elaborate effects: Toy Story Mania and WEB SLINGERS, which tracks riders’ hand movements with no blaster at all.
