Switch Track Explained – Theme Park Definition

A switch track is the coaster equivalent of a railway point: a length of track that slides, pivots or rotates to connect the main circuit to a second path. Mechanically it is straightforward; what it buys is layout freedom. A switch lets a train be sent backwards through a section it has already ridden, lets a ride offer two different routes from the same station, or simply lets trains be pulled off the circuit into a transfer shed at closing time.

As a show element it is usually about surprise. Expedition Everest reveals torn-up track ahead, then sends the train backwards down the mountain. Big Grizzly Mountain at Hong Kong Disneyland uses two. Bobbejaanland’s Fury uses one to give riders a forwards or a backwards ride from the same layout.
