Turntable Explained – Theme Park Definition

A turntable is a piece of track mounted on a rotating disc. The train rolls on, the disc turns — 180 degrees most often — and the train rolls off facing the other way. Because the rotation happens with the train stopped, it is a quiet moment by design: it lets a ride reverse direction without a shuttle spike or a switch track, and gives the show a beat where riders can be shown something.

On Voltron Nevera at Europa-Park the turntable sets up a backwards launch, and on many dark rides it is used to face riders towards a scene at exactly the right moment. Trackless dark rides achieve the same effect without any special hardware, since their vehicles can rotate freely at any point.
