Family Coaster Explained – Theme Park Definition

A family coaster is aimed at the widest possible audience rather than at thrill seekers. Height requirements typically start around 100–110 cm (often with an accompanying adult below that), speeds stay under about 60 km/h, and layouts avoid inversions and sustained high G-forces. That is a design constraint, not a lack of ambition: a good family coaster still has to deliver real airtime and pacing, just within a much narrower envelope.

Commercially they are among the most valuable rides a park can buy, because a whole group can ride together and the queue never empties. Vekoma’s Family Boomerang, Mack’s Youngstar and Zierer’s Tivoli are the workhorse models; Pegasus at Europa-Park, Raik at Phantasialand and Slinky Dog Dash at Disney’s Hollywood Studios are all built to this brief.
