Giga Coaster
A coaster exceeding 300 feet (91 m) in height — the category above hyper coasters, defined by extreme height and long, fast layouts.
Coasters
Giga coaster is the classification for roller coasters between 300 and 399 feet (approximately 91–121 m) in height. The term was coined by Cedar Fair and Intamin when Millennium Force opened at Cedar Point in 2000 — the world's first 300-foot coaster. Giga coasters share the hyper coaster's emphasis on height, sustained speed, and airtime rather than inversions, but the additional height translates to greater maximum speeds and longer, more expansive layouts.
As of 2025 there are no giga coasters in Europe — the continent's tallest coasters top out in the hyper coaster range. Globally, Fury 325 at Carowinds is widely considered the world's best steel coaster by enthusiast polls, with its 325-foot height, 153 km/h top speed, and 2-km layout. Millennium Force at Cedar Point and Intimidator 305 at Kings Dominion are the other landmark examples. The absence of a European giga coaster is a frequent discussion topic among European enthusiasts, who point to planning permission challenges and site size constraints as the main barriers.
