Madhouse Explained – Theme Park Definition

A madhouse is an illusion built out of one trick: the seating swings by only a few degrees, while the entire room around it rotates a full 360 degrees. With no fixed visual reference — the walls, ceiling and props are all moving together — the brain reads the motion as the bench turning over. Riders are certain they have been inverted; they never leave a shallow arc.

Vekoma made the format an industry standard after building Villa Volta for Efteling in 1996, which remains the definitive example and the reason the ride system is often just called a "Vekoma Madhouse". Phantasialand’s Feng Ju Palace, Europa-Park’s Cassandra’s Curse and Toverland’s Villa Fiasko all run the same system behind different stories.
