Shoot-the-Chute Explained – Theme Park Definition

A shoot-the-chute takes a wide, flat-bottomed boat holding twenty or more people up a single lift and drops it down one steep chute into a shallow trough. The boat displaces an enormous amount of water on impact, which is the point: the splash is aimed at a viewing bridge as much as at the riders. Unlike a log flume, which strings several small drops through a long meandering course, a shoot-the-chute is built around one drop and one splash.

The format usually anchors a themed area rather than filling one — Jurassic Park River Adventure at Islands of Adventure runs a full dark ride before the 26-metre drop, and Europa-Park’s Atlantica SuperSplash combines it with a water-coaster layout.
