Spinning Coaster
A coaster where cars rotate freely on a vertical axis throughout the ride, so every run offers a different orientation.
Coasters
A spinning coaster features cars mounted on a platform that rotates freely around a vertical axis throughout the ride. Because the rotation is uncontrolled, each individual run produces a different sequence of forward, backward, and sideways orientations through every element. The unpredictability is a significant part of the appeal — two consecutive rides on the same circuit can feel entirely different depending on how the car rotates.
Mack Rides and Gerstlauer are the leading manufacturers of spinning coasters. Mack's models are particularly well regarded for their smooth ride quality and family-friendly intensity level — they are often described as among the most accessible thrill rides available, offering genuine excitement without the intimidating height, speed, or restraint systems of major coasters. Efteling's Joris en de Draak and Flying Dutchman and Phantasialand's spinning coasters are popular European examples. Spinning coasters are widely regarded as excellent family rides and frequently have lower height requirements than equivalent non-spinning coasters.
