Heartline Roll
A 360-degree roll centred on the rider's centre of gravity rather than the track, delivering smooth, sustained near-weightlessness through the rotation.
Coaster Elements
A heartline roll (or heartline spin) is engineered so that the rider's heart — approximately the body's centre of gravity — remains at a constant elevation throughout the rotation, rather than the track being the pivot point. By keeping the centre of mass stationary, the design minimises G-forces throughout the roll, producing a smooth floating sensation quite distinct from the jolt of a standard corkscrew or even an inline twist.
Heartline rolls are a hallmark of modern B&M and Intamin hyper coaster design, where the engineering philosophy prioritises smooth, sustained sensations over sudden jolts. The element illustrates a broader truth about coaster design: the difference between a comfortable ride and an uncomfortable one often comes down to subtle track geometry decisions that are invisible to riders but felt in every bone. Heartline rolls appear on several of B&M's most celebrated hyper coasters and on Intamin's best-regarded multi-element coasters.
